I serve as Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine. My time is divided between clinical care in hospital medicine and infectious diseases, division and institutional leadership, research, and mentorship
I have a philosophical opposition to early morning meetings for many reasons. Many daycares and before school programs don’t open till 7:30am so a 7am meeting creates a particularly challenging stress, especially for those with young children, as one attempts to get children ready for school and simultaneously participate in the meeting virtually. It’s even worse if in-person attendance is expected. Women may be disproportionately affected. I make it a point to never schedule meetings I lead that early and to speak up when others do.
In my role as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Hospital Medicine, I have made improving DEI in journal leadership, authorship, and peer review a central tenet of my tenure. I have increased the proportion of women on the journal leadership team from 30% to 49% over a 2-year period.
A Manhattan (straight up, always stirred, never shaken) is a classic cocktail and one of my favorites.
